The WCCC 2004 season final event was at LACR on Saturday. Unlike the last event, where we had the track to ourselves, it turned out to be a long day as we shared the track with Pontiac Drag Days, Road Kings, Cal Classics, Southern California Pro Gas, & time-only. The weather was great…sunny, mid 60's and not much wind. Going into this event, there was a tie for first place between Dave Dowdell (2003 WCCC Champ) and rookie season driver Rochelle Dowdell. Their point lead made it numerically impossible for anyone to overtake them with the last event remaining. You got it, husband & wife locked in a battle for the season championship. I've said it before and I'll say it again, no good can come of this… Now on to the details…

Rochelle Dowdell drove her Red 2003 automatic coupe through the field to once again take the A & A Corvette Specialties winner's trophy & gift certificate, scoring back-to-back WCCC event wins. Rochelle proved that her rookie year was no fluke, as she earned the number one qualifier position (closest to dial) in the first round of eliminations, which earned her the second round bye. Rochelle also clinched the 2004 WCCC Season Points Championship in the second round when husband Dave squeezed the tree a little too tight with a -0.007 RED light loss to Jerry Malcolm. The ladder had paired up the winner of Dave and Jerry's 2nd round race with Rochelle. If Dave had made it past Jerry, the third round would have proved to be the deciding race for the season, but that wasn't to be. Instead, Dave has to live with Rochelle's "I'm the Champ" dance for the next 12 months. Rochelle made it past Jerry in the semi-final round and was paired up with Jim Lane for the finals. For the final round, both Rochelle and Jim had conservative reaction times, but Rochelle prevailed with a 13.881@98.88 on a 13.80 dial to Jim's 14.832@93.39 on a 14.65 dial. I can't think of a better way to end a Championship run, than by winning the final event of the season. Congratulations to Rochelle Dowdell for a great year, and her rookie year at that.

Jim Lane's run to the Final round included a second round win over the low ET holder Anthony Coalati and a Semi-Final round win over previous back-to-back WCCC event winner Phil Reese. Jim took home the A & A Corvette Specialties sponsored runner-up trophy & gift certificate for his efforts.

Congratulations to semi-finalists Jerry Malcolm and Phil Reese. Both Jerry and Phil received a VETTE magazine sponsored semi-final round gift certificate for their efforts this month. Gary Combs took home the West Coast Corvettes sponsored Best Reaction Time Trophy and gift certificate, awarded for the best RT of the first round of eliminations, with a 0.022. Gary's first round win over Mike Villeneuve earned him third place, with Mike taking fourth place for season points.

Anthony Coalati from Lake Havasu City had the Low ET for the day of 9.664@140.26 with his stealth black '90.

The WCCC thanks the track and tower crew at LACR who had a busy day with all of the groups on hand. I also want to give a big thanks from the WCCC, to all of the participants & families that continue to come out to the track and support our events. Thanks for your support over the entire 2004 season. We hope to see you again for the 2005 season.
