Dave Dowdell Wins 2007 WCCC Event # 8 at LACR!

07/14/07 - We were back at Los Angles County Raceway for our last couple of races before the track closes. We started time trials about 6pm on Saturday, with temps in the 90s and a DA of around 5700 feet.

We only had four of us show up so we decided to have a little shootout to break some points ties. It was fun because we had all won an event this year. Robert Piroumian beat Javier Navarro, and Dave Dowdell beat me. Then Dave beat Robert in a good race. We were at an eighth mile because of dust. Dave had a .081 RT to Robert's .067, then Dave finished with an 8.706 ET to an 8.70 dial, and Robert ran a 7.281 on his 7.18 dial. Dave was also Closest to Dial and had Best Reaction Time, so he had to take most of the trophies back home with him.

We also went ahead and raced with the Team LACR Summit Series. Dave, Javier and I raced in the Trophy class, and Robert and Dave raced in Pro. Robert and I lost in the first round, but Dave and Javier advanced in trophy class, and Dave made it to the semis in either trophy or pro (I can't remember). Dave ended up beating Javier in the trophy second round, but Javier gave him a good race.

Our next race is Sunday, July 22 at noon back at LACR.

2007 Event 8 Results Summary
Winner, Closest to Dial, and Best RT: David Dowdell

Three New Dates at LACR!

06/12/07 - Three new dates at Los Angeles County Raceway have just been announced for the month of July. Just added are July 14, July 22 and July 28. Join us if you can.

Gary Combs Wins 2007 WCCC Event # 7 at LACR!

06/09/07 - Gary Combs (silver 2003 C5) won event #7 of the 2007 West Coast Corvette Challenge against runner-up Dave Dowdell (red 2003 C5) at Los Angeles County Raceway. The final had a .035 margin of victory with Gary running a 14.344 on a 14.29 dial and a slightly better RT to Dave's 13.465 on a 13.43 dial.

It was a beautiful day in the high desert. We shared the track with Team LACR, Pontiac Drag Days, and some test and tune. We had good traction, no spills, and no accidents. The motocross track next door was closed and nobody at the gravel company was working on our side of the track, so we had no dust and sand blowing around. By the time we ran our final at 2pm, it was 91 degrees. At the track altitude of 2,710 feet, 10% humidity and 29.76 barometric pressure we had a DA of 5556.

Robert Piroumian (2004 C5 SC) was the semi-finalist today, and he was fastest in eliminations with an 11.467 at 120.27 mph.

Jim Lane earned the Napa Auto Parts/LACR trophy for best first round reaction time with a .001 reaction time. Ron Posen earned the first round closest to dial trophy with a 13.423 run on a 13.30 dial in.

Congratulations to first round winners Phil Reese, Jim Lane, and Ron Posen.

We will have another race or two at LACR before they close. The date will be posted when it is scheduled. It looks like an afternoon/night race in July. Thanks again to Bernie and the crew at LACR, and to Dave Dowdell for coordinating everything for the WCCC.

Thanks to Wes and Reb for the great pictures at The Corvette Forum

Los Angeles County Raceway set to close on July 29th...WCCC fate unclear

06/01/07 - Just got word today from the track manager at LACR, that the track will be closing for good on July 29th. This may be the beginning of the end of the West Coast Corvette Challenge as a 'points' series. Our next WCCC race, the 7th event for 2007, is scheduled for June 9th at LACR, and the events scheduled at LACR for September and October that will not be happening now. June 9th may be the end of the 2007 WCCC season. We may still have one or two events each year at the tracks at Las Vegas (LVMS) or Bakersfield (Famoso). Stay tuned to find out the fate of the WCCC series... Discuss this on the Corvette Forum.

2007 Event 4 Winner Dave Dowdell
Group shot 2007 Event 4 March 31, 2007
2007 Event 4 Runner-up Tony Hamilton
Points leader Dave Dowdell and his red C5 A4 won event #4 of the 2007 West Coast Corvette Challenge against runner-up and reformed import racer Tony Hamilton and his blue C6 MN6 at Los Angeles County Raceway. Dave dialed a 13.30 to Tony's 12.70. Dave had about a tenth better light and was able to hold off Tony for an off throttle MOV of .241 at 13.409 and 97.21 mph. This was Dave's eleventh Corvette Challenge win! Congratulations, Dave!

Gates opened at LACR at 9am and we finished around 3pm. We shared the track with Pontiac Drag Days, 10.5-12.5 brackets, and three amber practice. It was in the low 80's and no wind. We had good track prep, no crashes, and no spills all day.

Gary Combs (silver C5 A4) was the semi-finalist today, and was Closest to Dial with a 14.193 on a 14.180.

Javier Navarro Wins 2007 WCCC Event # 3 at LACR!

2007 Event 3 Winner Javier Navarro
Group shot 2007 Event 3 March 03, 2007
2007 Event 3 Runner-up and Best RT Phil Reese
2007 Event 3 Closest To Dial Jim Lane
Javier Navarro and his blue C6 MN6 won event #3 of the 2007 West Coast Corvette Challenge against runner-up Phil Reese and his black 383 C3 at Los Angeles County Raceway. Javier went first with a .050 RT on a 13.55 dial to Phil's .154 RT. Phil spun the tires but was gaining quickly. From the stands, it looked like Phil had overtaken Javier but at the end Javier was off the throttle for a 13.709 at 97.21 mph win to Phil's 13.017 at 108.66 mph. Javier's MOV was .162. This was Javier's first Corvette Challenge win, and put the six-speeders at 2 out of 3 wins so far for the year. Congratulations, Javier!

It was a light crowd at LACR, gates opened at 9am and we finished around 2pm. We shared the track with only the Early Riders/Road Kings and three amber practice. The wind was up and blowing sand on the track, and we went down to one practice lane about an hour before eliminations. The LACR crew prepped the track for about a half-hour before eliminations and we drew names out of the hat for lane assignments. As it turned out, the left lane was about a half second slower because of the sandy traction issues. One of our racers, Rocky Zarillo, unfortunately had to waste a .038 RT in the first round when he wisely had to get out of his run at about 300 feet. Thankfully, everyone at the track was mindful of the conditions, and we had no crashes or close calls at all.

Our Semifinalist was Dave Dowdell, who has been in the semis in each race so far this year.

2007 Event 2 Results Summary
Winner: Javier Navarro
Runner-Up: Phil Reese

Phil Reese earned the NAPA Auto Parts/LACR trophy for best first round reaction time with a .058. Phil also had the closest race of the day against Henry Mynatt (C5 Z06) with a MOV of .053. Phil had a package of .108 in that race, with .058 RT and a 12.450 ET on a 12.40 dial.

Congratulations to Mark Davis in his orange C6, who earned a first round bye with .007 RT in practice. Congratulations to first round winners Jim Lane and Mike Villeneuve. The WCCC welcomes Claude, who joined us with his Millennium Yellow Z06, with C5R 427…and pending a twin turbo setup. We hope you can make it out to race with us again Claude.

Robert Piroumian Wins 2007 WCCC Event # 2 at LACR!

2007 Event 2 Winner Robert Piroumian
Group shot 2007 Event 2 February 17, 2007
2007 Event 2 Runner-up Phil Reese
2007 Event 2 Best RT Vincent Darley
2007 Event 2 Closest To Dial Javier Navarro
Robert Piroumian and his black supercharged C5 Z06 won event # 2 of the West Coast Corvette Challenge 2007 season in a great final against Phil Reese and his black 383 C3 at Los Angeles County Raceway. Phil left first on a 12.37 dial, but spun a bit for a 1.997 60-foot time instead of his 1.7 to 1.8 in previous rounds. Robert dialed 11.50 and was in pursuit right away on a 0.009 RT and a great 1.666 60 foot. Phil ended up off his dial by .322 at 12.692, enabling Robert to pass by about a car length for the win at 11.928. This puts Robert in a three-way tie for first place. Congratulations, Robert!

It was a full day at LACR, gates opened at 9am and we finished after 5pm. We were at our final call to lanes to start time trials at about 10am, when a tractor from the gravel company next door drove parallel to the track, stirring up sand and with the wind, covered the track with blown sand. That took about a half-hour to clean up. Later on in the afternoon, a heavily modified Mazda dropped some fluid, touched the right wall and crossed the centerline in front of a motorcycle in the left lane. The bike was able to brake in time and then finished his run as if nothing happened. Those were the only real delays. The barometer was 30.12 for most of the afternoon; we had good traction, so many of us were enjoying low ETs and high mph.

Semifinalists were Javier Navarro and Dave Dowdell. Javier Navarro also earned the WCCC sponsored, first round Closest-to-Dial trophy with a 13.667 on a 13.59.

Congratulations to our other first round winners: Rocky Zarillo, Mike Villenueve, and Vincent Darley. It was nice to see Al Adams racing with us again.

The WCCC would like to welcome Steve Parrish, racing with the WCCC for the first time in his Silver '96 LT4 coupe. Steve, we hope to see you at future WCCC events.

Finally, the WCCC wants to express our condolences to the family of Donna Tite. Donna had worked at LACR over twenty-six years. We got to know her the past few years as she ran the WCCC races from the tower, set our ladders, and was responsible for tower operations. We saw that many racers from Team LACR had dedications to her written on their cars. A memorial for Donna will be held at LACR on February 24th, beginning at 3PM.

Saturday, January 20 was a daytime race at Los Angeles County Raceway. Temperatures were in the 50s and it was windy. We shared the track with the Road Kings/Early Riders and Pontiac Drag Days car clubs, and some test and tuners. With no major incidents, we finished by 2pm.

Saturday, June 24 was a night race. Temperatures were still in the low 90s by race time, it was windy and a nearby brush fire made for an eerie atmosphere at twilight. With sand blowing across the track, and a broken car dropping fluids early, the WCCC watched as other racers were crashing into guardrails, losing control and crossing the center line one after the other. It was two hours before most of the WCCC got our second time trial. By then, track management was running singles only, and another bracket racing group decided not to run at all. By about 8pm the wind turned into a nice breeze, the brush fire was out, and the sand was under control to get everything back to normal.

Dave Dowdell, in his blue C4, won the Cormier Chevrolet sponsored Runner-Up trophy. Dave prevailed over semi finalist Mark Davis in his C6 on a double breakout. Dave also took the WCCC Closest to Dial trophy in the first round.

Congratulations to our other semi finalist, Henry Mynatt in his C5 Z06, who also won the LACR/NAPA Auto Parts sponsored Best Reaction Time trophy with a .039 RT.

Congratulations to our other first round winners Jim Lane, Phil Reese, and first time racer Jason McDonald. Jim earned a first round bye with a .014 RT in time trials.

Robert Piroumian ran a 12.109 at 119.76 mph under tough track conditions for the low ET in the first round of eliminations.

Saturday, February 4 was a clear, breezy, and sunny racing day in the California high desert, with the temperatures in the 60s to low 70s at our home track, Los Angeles County Raceway. Great weather for February drag racing. We shared the track with test and tune folks only, so everyone had opportunities for many time trial runs

Low E.T. in Eliminations:Robert Piroumian with 11.67
Mike Villenueve, one of the original WCCC racers, won the second 2006 event in his magnetic red 2002 coupe. Mike took the A & A Corvette Performance winner's trophy on his opponent's -.037 foul. This was Mike's second overall Challenge victory. Congratulations Mike. Mike advanced to the finals with a semi-final win over Rochelle Dowdell, 2004 WCCC Champion, in her torch red 2003 coupe.

Gary Combs won the Cormier Chevrolet sponsored Runner-Up trophy in his C5. Gary advanced to the finals with a semi-final win over Dave Dowdell, in a double red-light round. In the first round, Gary also earned the Vapor Trail Vettes Closest to Dial trophy, with a 13.955 on a 13.92 dial, and the LACR/NAPA Auto Parts sponsored Best Reaction Time trophy with a 0.039 RT.

Congratulations to our other first round winners Kat McSwain, Phil Reese, and Gabino Diaz. Kat McSwain earned a first round bye with her .001 RT during time trials. Kat also had the best RT in time trials at the last WCCC event, but no bye was awarded due to an even number of participants…super lights, keep up the great RT's.

Robert Piroumian was our fastest in eliminations, with an 11.678 ET at 111.99 mph in his black Z06. Robert also ran an 11.34 in time trials.

The WCCC continued our new first round elimination format for event #2. The new format pools the top six or eight points drivers for 1st round pairings, depending on the day's turnout. For the second event of 2006, the points standings from the first race in 2006 were used. The top driver pairs were randomly drawn from a hat containing the top 6 drivers. The remaining drivers were randomly paired for round one. Second round and on pairings are determined by the sportsman ladder based on closest-to-dial-in from first round results. The new idea was suggested in order to give some of the lesser experienced drivers a chance to not repeatedly get paired up with the top drivers. One down side is that half of the top pool of drivers is guaranteed to be out in the first round. But as with any pairing, you still must cut a good light, and run your number. Our hope was to get increase the number of return participants. For events #3 and on, we will be using current 2006 points for the top driver pool. We'll let you know how it turns out over the course of the 2006 season.

Thanks to all our sponsors including NAPA Auto Parts/Los Angeles County Raceway, Cormier Chevrolet, Perez Web Design, Opitima Batteries, Vapor Trail Vettes, and especially Andy and Melissa Green of A&A Corvette Performance

Gary Combs wins the WCCC 2006 Season Opener at LACR!

Saturday, January 21st was a clear, cool, and sunny racing day in the California high desert, with the temperatures in the high 40s to mid 50s. Great weather for racing at our home track, Los Angeles County Raceway. We shared the track with Pontiac Drag Days, the Southern California Drag Racing Association (SCEDA) and Junior Dragsters. With a small number of cars overall at the track, and no accidents or clean ups, we had a great day.

Gary Combs, in his silver 03 coupe, prevailed over Jim Lane in the final contest. Jim red-lit by .003 to give Gary the A & A Corvette Performance winner's trophy. After claiming the 2005 runner-up spot, Gary is off to a quick start for the 2006 points chase. Congratulations Gary!

Jim Lane won the Cormier Chevrolet sponsored Runner-Up trophy in his C4 over semi-finalist Mike Villenueve, when Mike red-lit by .010. In the first round, Jim earned the Vapor Trail Vettes Closest to Dial and LACR/NAPA Auto Parts sponsored Best Reaction Time trophies when he launched on a .001 RT and finished with a 14.503 ET on a 14.50 dial for a .004 package. 2003 & 2005 WCCC Champion Dave Dowdell, was our other semi-finalist.

Congratulations to the remaining first round winners Javier Navarro, Phil Reese, Al Carrington and Rocky Zarillo. We also want to thank first time WCCC racers Robert Piroumian and Martin Rangel for racing with us. Ron Poseli and Steve Cudahy also ran time trials with us. Hope to see them out again to race with us.

Kat McSwain was our fastest in eliminations, with an 11.899 ET at 115.54 mph in her Z06. Kat also had the best reaction time in the time trials, with a 0.007, which would have given her the first round bye, if necessary. Unfortunately for Kat, we had an even number for first round of eliminations…so no bye this time around. Sorry Kat.

The WCCC tried a new first round elimination format for event #1. The new format pools the top six or eight points drivers for 1st round pairings. For the first event of 2006, the final points standings from 2005 were used. So the first round shaped up as follows: Al Carrington (6) met Phil Reese (5), Gary Combs (2) met Jim Holland(4), and finally Dave Dowdell (1) met Rochelle Dowdell (3). Those top driver pairs were randomly drawn from a hat containing the top 6 drivers. The remaining drivers were randomly paired for round one. Second round and on pairings are determined by the sportsman ladder based on closest-to-dial-in from first round results. The new idea was suggested in order to give some of the lesser experienced drivers a chance to not repeatedly get paired up with the top drivers, and to maybe go some rounds. One down side is that half of the top pool of drivers is guaranteed to be out in the first round. But as with any pairing, you still must cut a good light, and run your number. Our hope was to get increase the number of return participants. For events #2 and on, we will be using current 2006 points for the top driver pool. We'll let you know how it turns out over the course of the 2006 season. Please let me know your thoughts on the new format.

It was great to see Jack Sweet at the track again. He was not racing with us this time. He has a 12-second C3 and is working on putting a motor into a 65 Chevy II. We hope to see Jack and his C3 back with us soon.

THE LATEST WCCC NEWS!

WCCC EXCEEDS CHARITY GOALS WITH LATEST DONATION!

1/11/04 - In our inaugural season we donated over $ 500.00 to the Widow's and Children's Fund of the New York City Fire Department to assist those who surviving family members who had lost a loved one in the line of duty.

Our goal for last season was to double that amount. We figured that since we were doubling the number of races that we wanted to double the amount we were donating to the first response community. It turns out that we were a bit more successful than we anticipated.

As always, the more we race, the more we can donate to worthwhile causes that have the noble mission of assisting those family members of uniformed men and who have suffered the ultimate loss.

Thanks to the active support of so many including our sponsors and all of you who race with us each year, we exceeded our goal and at our annual banquet, we presented a check in the amount of $ 2,417.30 to the South Bay Police and Fire Memorial Fund!

Many thanks to Firefighter John Bushman of the Torrance Fire Department, his wife Joanie, and Police Chief Mike Lavin of the Redondo Beach Police Department and all of the uniformed personnel who attended. It is an honor to serve those who protect us every minute of every hour of every day of the year. God bless them all.

On their behalf, may we again exceed our goals for this racing season…

A letter from the South Bay fund

January 28, 2004

Dear Dr. Brown,

I wanted to take this opportunity to send you this short note of appreciation for your generous donation of $ 2,417.30 to the South Bay Police and Fire Memorial Foundation. This donation was received on January 10, 2004 as a result of a fund-raising activities conducted by the West Coast Corvette Challenge. You and your club members are to be commended for this selfless activity to benefit the members of the Police and Fire Memorial Foundation.

The South Bay Police and Fire memorial Foundation is dedicated to providing financial support for families of fallen or disabled police and fire personnel from the nine South Bay cities that have their own police and fire agencies. I hope that all of you feel a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that your generous contribution will help ease the pain and suffering of our police and fire officers in need.

Thank you one again for your contribution.

Sincerely,

Michael Lavin, Police Chief and President
South Bay Police and Fire Memorial Foundation

FIRST RESPONSE COMMUNITY SUPPORTED BY THE WCCC

There are two main purposes to the WCCC:

One is to drag race with our fellow Vette owners. The second is to provide all of us with an opportunity to support charitable causes that directly benefit families and loved ones who are trying to survive the loss of a loved one in the line of duty. Specifically, we support the widows and children of fallen firefighters and peace officers in our region.

At the end of last year's racing season we made a donation to one such charity - the Uniformed Firefighter's Association of the New York Fire Department's Widow's and Children's fund. Here is the text of a letter that I received from the President of the UFA and addressed to the West Coast Corvette Challenge:

    "Dear Dr. Brown,

Please accept this letter of thanks for your organization's generous contribution of $ 514.80 to our UFA Widows' and children's Fund, on November 21, 2002.

The September 11th. tragedy affected the entire world but was particularly devastating to the New York City Fire Department. We lost 343 of our brothers and we are still trying our best to deal with that horrible reality. The care and concern shown by you and so many others enables us to provide a significant measure of financial help to the families they have left behind. I can assure you that firefighters never forget their fallen brothers and your contribution assists us in that worthy effort.

    God bless you,

    Sincerely,

    SATEPHEN J. CASSIDY
    President, U.F.A.
    "

Receiving this letter made all of the efforts that we expended last season more than worth of any inconvenience to us in putting on our events. As always, we want to offer our many thanks to ALL of our sponsors and racers who helped to make this happen.

We will be donating again to the first response community at the end of this racing season as well. This year's recipient will be the South Bay Police and Firefighter Memorial Fund. They are wholly dedicated to assisting the surviving families of fallen police officers and firefighters. They donate directly to the families so there are no middle men. They provide tangible assistance with burial expenses, scholarships for surviving children and spouses, and healthcare. So please remember: the more you race, the more we can donate to the families of those who gave all.

If you have any general or specific questions about the West Coast Corvette Challenge Drag Racing Series, just send an e-mail to Dave Dowdell and you can always monitor the Corvette Forum Drag Racing Section and the Pacific Section for updates as well as this website.
